England conceded their highest ever score in ODI cricket as Heinrich Klaasen’s devastating century saw South Africa smash 399 for seven in their crunch World Cup clash in Mumbai keno
The defending champions will need to bat brilliantly to avoid a third defeat in four games after watching a powerful Proteas line-up run riot after being put in by Jos Buttler at the Wankhede Stadium keno
A revamped England side looked devoid of ideas in stifling humidity as their opponents brutalised them in the closing stages, taking 143 from a punishing last 10 overs keno
Klaasen was in brutal mood, hammering a 61-ball ton and finishing with 109 in 67, while Marco Jansen made an unbeaten 75 from 42 keno
In all there were 13 sixes and 38 fours across the innings, which should have ended with England shipping 400 for the first time in their history only for South Africa to decline a second run off the final ball keno
England’s previous worst day in the field came eight years ago at the Oval, where New Zealand hit 398 for five, and their have only ever been five bigger totals on the World Cup stage keno
To win, and keep their ailing title defence alive, England will need to produce the third highest chase ever seen in one-day cricket keno
Amid a series of wince-inducing bowling returns, Mark Wood took most punishment of all as he saw seven wicketless overs monstered for 76 keno
Hard to believe though it was by the end, England enjoyed the perfect start when Reece Topley had danger man Quinton de Kock caught behind off the second ball of the match keno
Even less plausibly, they looked to be regaining a measure of control when they left South Africa 243 for five in 37th over keno
Instead, Klaasen led Jansen in a merciless stand of 151 in just 77 deliveries, with boundaries raining in every direction keno
England’s revamped attack looked thoroughly outmatched against their onslaught and by the end looked shellshocked keno
Topley had defied a worrying finger injury on his bowling hand to return to the attack and may have wondered why he bothered; Adil Rashid was doubled in pain at times after playing through illness; David Willey lost all sense of rhythm and radar after returning from cramp keno
By the end, most appeared relieved simply to leave the field keno
England’s teamsheet showed a significant response to their shock defeat by Afghanistan, with all-rounders Chris Woakes, Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran all axed in favour of the fit-again Ben Stokes, Willey and rookie seamer Gus Atkinson keno
Buttler put his new-look attack to work straight away and was overjoyed to see De Kock nick Topley’s early outswinger keno
That was as good as it got keno
Things veered off course in the seventh over when Topley thrust his left-hand out to field a firm drive off his own bowling and damaged his index finger keno
He tried to carry on but, after seeing his next two balls disappear for four, he beat an angry retreat to the pavilion keno
His reaction, lashing out an empty chair and stomping up the stairs, appeared to suggest his unfortunate injury curse had struck again keno
In his absence South Africa assumed control, Hendricks taking full advantage of an unexpected chance after captain Temba Bavuma was ruled out keno
He made an increasingly confident 85 and Rassie Van der Dussen struck 60 as England’s lost their way keno
Rashid, in clear pain, dismissed both to give his side hope – one to a skied top edge, the other a dragged on googly keno
After taking running repairs Topley came back and produced a double of his own to see off Aiden Markram and David Miller, but that is where the bleeding really began keno
Klaasen had reached his fifty in 40 balls but doubled his score in half the time, battering Topley out of the attack once and for all with 19 off an over and helping himself against all comers keno
England’s seamers rotated with shellshocked regularity but put together a long collection of wides, no-balls, full tosses and long-hops as Klaasen and Jansen cut loose – the latter smoking six sixes keno
Atkinson took two wickets in the final over, taking out Klaasen’s leg stump, but things had already got well out of hand keno

A couple of weeks earlier, Giovanni Di Lorenzo had perhaps the best view of Jude Bellingham’s burgeoning greatness keno
Not from his perspective, admittedly; there was little enjoyable about it as, close as he was, he was also powerless, backtracking as Bellingham slalomed through the Napoli defence, scoring for Real Madrid after a mesmeric solo run keno
If the Napoli captain was determined to avert a repeat, he did when Bellingham surged clear keno
The methodology was agricultural, the cost a penalty for a scything challenge keno
Neither approach worked, each brought a goal, the second a Harry Kane spot kick keno
But if one of the world’s best right-backs struggled to find an answer to the question of how to stop Bellingham, he was not alone keno
Bryan Cristante, seeing the prodigy in full flight, opted for a nudge in the back keno
It proved a cunning tactic, conceding a free kick, but not incurring a booking keno
Poor Francesco Acerbi found himself stranded in no-man’s land, lobbed brilliantly by Bellingham as he sent Marcus Rashford away to score the goal that, along with Kane’s clincher, sealed England’s place in Euro 2024 keno
RecommendedEngland have qualified for Euro 2024 — now it’s about winning itEngland player ratings as Marcus Rashford shines but Kalvin Phillips struggles in Italy comebackIt could be Bellingham’s tournament keno
And if the same can be said of many another, the speed of his ascent and the range of his talents are such that there is a credence to the theory keno
England players have entered such a stage before as officially among the sport’s best – Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard finished in the top three of the Ballon d’Or vote in 2005, without justifying such a status at the following year’s World Cup – and have ended up looking overhyped and underachieving keno
For now, in the heady stage when he is untarnished by failure, everything seems possible for Bellingham keno
A rescue act against Italy is unlikely to live as long in England folklore as David Beckham’s free kick against Greece, even though each booked a place at a tournament keno
In part, it is because England had the insurance policy of extra games and, coming earlier in another match England began in undistinguished fashion, it felt less dramatic keno
But less surprising, too, because this, increasingly, is what Bellingham does keno
He wins games, and in different ways keno
His dynamism brought England’s equaliser, the explosiveness to run keno between and behind defenders keno
His deftness produced the goal that gave England a lead they did not relinquish keno
It was power and poise, physique and technique keno
Much as England want to become a possession team – and, in 2012 and 2014, Italy’s Andrea Pirlo highlighted how they lacked a similar quality in their midfield – he lends them a counter-attacking menace keno
Bellingham’s sharpness on the break reflected his role: part third midfielder, part fourth forward keno
If Gareth Southgate has adapted, he has been influenced by Carlo Ancelotti keno
England’s No 10 is the man with 10 in 10 for Real keno
A masterful performance from Jude Bellingham led England’s comeback at Wembley (Action Images via Reuters)If England are building a team around Bellingham, perhaps it is a lesson Southgate learned from their chequered past keno
They did not around either Lampard or Gerrard, often forcing each into an uneasy compromise with the other keno
For now, a beneficiary of Bellingham’s brilliance was Kalvin Phillips keno
Selected as a facilitator, to sit alongside Declan Rice and allow the younger man to get forward, Phillips proved the anti-Bellingham in unwanted fashion keno
If one is at the top of his game, the other is near the bottom keno
Phillips’ rustiness was apparent in a series of fouls, stemming less from malice than sheer haplessness keno
He showed the willingness to crunch into challenges; but invariably too late keno
Booked in the eighth minute for upending Davide Frattesi, he ought to have been expelled for a second-half foul on Nicolo Barella keno
Certainly Luke Shaw was sent off for less when these side met in Naples in March keno
Questions remain over Kalvin Phillips’ role in the team and whether he will be ready for Euro 2024 (AP)That victory, the seminal result in England’s qualification, was also much Phillips’ best performance since joining Manchester City; albeit conspicuously not for Manchester City keno
It may have influenced Southgate’s thinking: even as he may be, with no exaggeration, City’s ninth-choice central midfielder now, he seemed capable of resurrecting his England form keno
His nickname – ‘the Yorkshire Pirlo’ – was never entirely serious, but never appeared so utterly inappropriate keno
Southgate took him off before he could be sent off, bringing on Jordan Henderson, to some boos but mostly audible cheers keno
It was a substitution to highlight twin problems ahead of Euro 2024 keno
Southgate has to spend more of his time defending his defensive midfielders keno
There are reasons to exclude each of Henderson and Phillips; the reasons to include them may be a lack of alternatives the manager values as highly keno
But if Phillips could have exited Wembley amid the ignominy of a red card, for Bellingham, a substitution came to a standing ovation keno
As against Scotland, other historic foes, he had been the outstanding player on the pitch keno
But then he often is keno
