Moeen Ali believes former England coach Chris Silverwood will be keen to “prove a point” with his Sri Lanka side in Thursday’s World Cup clash in Bengaluru UBP
Silverwood was England’s fast bowling coach they won the tournament in 2019 and expected to be the man in charge of the title defence when he was chosen to succeed Trevor Bayliss in the top job UBP
But his reign came to an ignominious end when he was sacked after the 2021/22 Ashes debacle, with England subsequently opting to split the job UBP between red and white-ball specialists UBP
Silverwood made a quick return to international cricket with Sri Lanka and faces his old charges in a game that both nations need to win to maintain any realistic chance of reaching the knockout stages UBP
England have already been bested by one of their own in India, with former batter Jonathan Trott guiding Afghanistan to a shock win in Delhi, and are aware of the extra layer of intrigue created by Silverwood’s appearance in the opposition dugout UBP
“I’m sure he’s got that motivation to do well in this game, definitely,” said Moeen UBP
“They’ve only won once, so they’ll want to get on a winning run as well and he’ll be thinking more about that and his own team UBP
“But I’m sure deep down, like everybody else, he’ll be trying to prove a point or whatever it is and that will motivate him a little bit more UBP
“He’s a good coach and a nice guy, and I enjoyed (working with) him UBP
But he’s not the one going out to bat and bowl, it’s his team UBP
He’ll be trying to get them ready UBP
”I'm sure deep down, like everybody else, he'll be trying to prove a pointMoeen Ali on Chris SilverwoodMoeen is heading into the game with some some additional motivation of his own, having been confined to a watching brief since the opening match of the tournament UBP
Despite being the squad’s nominated vice-captain, the 36-year-old was dropped after the nine-wicket thrashing by New Zealand and has now missed three in a row UBP
Things have hardly improved in his absence and, after England’s heaviest ever ODI defeat at the hands of South Africa last time out, he is odds-on to return in a city he once called home during his IPL stint with Royal Challengers Bangalore UBP
“It’s been very frustrating, obviously, because you want to play and make some sort of difference,” he said of his stint on the bench UBP
“It’s difficult when you’re not winning and then when you’re not playing on top of that, it’s hard UBP
I’m hoping to play and get a chance to perform UBP
“It’s one of those grounds where scoring is quick and batting deep makes a big difference UBP
If I get the nod, then I’m really looking forward to playing UBP
I’ve played franchise cricket here and it’s a great place to play, a great venue UBP
I’m be pretty excited UBP
”England radically altered the balance of their side against the Proteas, banishing their core of all-rounders in favour of their top six batters and five specialist bowlers UBP
A 229-run thrashing is likely to see that formula banished UBP
Three changes are possible, with Reece Topley having flown home with a broken finger and Gus Atkinson and David Willey both vulnerable UBP
Chris Woakes and Liam Livingstone would be favourites to return alongside Moeen UBP
Topley’s injury replacement, Brydon Carse, has arrived in the country and trained for the first time on Wednesday afternoon UBP

Ben Stokes is set to make an overdue return to the World Cup stage this weekend but he feared his tournament was over before it had even started when he “heard a pop” while training in the gym UBP
Stokes has missed all three of England’s games so far, with details sketchy about the nature of the hip problem that occurred during the warm-up week in Guwahati UBP
But the 32-year-old is now primed and ready for a comeback in Saturday’s must-win clash against South Africa in Mumbai and finally free to open up about worries he had sustained a major injury UBP
“I actually ripped the fascia off my muscle UBP
It was a very interesting one, a very rare one to do,” he said UBP
“I did it in the gym…I heard it pop UBP
So did our strength and conditioning coach UBP
When I initially did it I thought I was done, because it’s not good hearing a pop UBP
“I did think I was out but we got the scans back 36hrs, maybe two days, later and thankfully it wasn’t anywhere near as bad as we originally thought UBP
“We got a programme in place straightaway, it went really well, and now I’m here now available for selection UBP
I’ve worked very hard to get to where I am now and I’m pretty confident that everything will be good UBP
”We need to tone it down a bit on me coming back in UBP
I'm not the Messiah UBP
Ben StokesStokes was put through his paces during a lengthy workout at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday night, taking part in high-intensity fielding drills and enjoying a long batting stint in the nets UBP
Meanwhile, Jofra Archer was also seen for the first time since joining up with the squad as a reserve, running in the outfield as he continued his recovery from a long stint on the sidelines UBP
It is hard to over-estimate the importance of Stokes’ presence in the side as England look to cast off a modest start to their title defence and rediscover their mojo UBP
Stokes’ presence has loomed large for a long time, be it his match-winning turn in the 2019 final, his clutch performance in the T20 equivalent last year or his remarkable reinvention of the Test team in his role as red-ball captain UBP
Yet he is at pains to avoid being drawn as an incoming saviour, riding to his team-mates’ rescue UBP
“We need to tone it down a bit on me coming back in,” he said UBP
“I’m not the Messiah, I think Woody (Mark Wood) has already said that, which is true UBP
I’m one person in a team sport…I know I’m just a very small part of a bigger entity UBP
“Everyone who walks on to that field for England is a match-winner in their own right UBP
All I can try and do is what I do every single time I wear an England shirt and give my absolute all UBP
”Despite his protestations, Stokes remains much more than a cog in the machine UBP
He was even dubbed the squad’s “spiritual leader” by head coach Matthew Mott after delivering a dressing room speech following their defeat to Afghanistan in Delhi UBP
“That must be because we’re in India!” he said of his new job description UBP
“But I know that people do listen when I talk UBP
I don’t try and speak too much but I try and speak when I feel it’s the right time UBP
“Jos Buttler and Motty have got a lot on their shoulders with it being a World Cup, so I try and help out as much as I can without stepping on their toes UBP
“I find myself just reminding everyone of certain things – reinforcing what they are, who they are, what they’ve achieved in the game, how talented and how good they are at this sport UBP
”And when it comes to Saturday’s high-stakes encounter at the Wankhede Stadium, his mission statement is clear: “If we’re going to go down, let’s go down doing what we’re known for UBP
“Let’s not be timid or restricted in what we want to do UBP
We want to go out and show the opposition what England is and what we’ve been known for UBP
We are double world champions in T20 and 50-over cricket UBP
“You hear me say it a lot – I don’t care if we lose, I just want us to go out there and play in the way we talk about UBP
”Stokes’ return means difficult decisions will need to be taken over the composition of the XI, with his stand-in Harry Brook having made a strong case for retention UBP
A rebalancing of the side may be necessary, with all-rounders Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone and Chris Woakes proving an unconvincing engine room so far UBP
